What was the purpose of the event?

The Satellite Event of the Ocean Decade Conference was named "Unveiling the Role of G20 in the Implementation and Legacy of the Ocean Decade” and took place on April 8th, from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB) Auditorium. This panel at the Ocean Decade Conference was an opportunity to better integrate G20 and the Ocean Decade, considering the role and views of scientific institutions and the private sector.

What is in the Program?

Science and technology have a central role in ocean sustainability, including knowledge-sharing, technology transfer, and capacity building to build the ocean we need for the future we want. The meeting will share insights and recommendations to compose the O20 Comuniqué considering strategies to strengthen the synergy between G20 and the Ocean Decade within the broad ocean roadmap until 2030.

The role of science in paving ocean sustainable economy and setting targets for a blue transition will also be addressed. The panel will delve into key recommendations for the G20, focusing on the pivotal role of industry and science in driving the transition towards a sustainable blue economy. With representatives from leading ocean industry players, the discussion aims to highlight actionable strategies and targets necessary for fostering this transition within the G20 framework while strengthening the objectives of the Ocean Decade.

 

This session explored synergies between the Ocean Decade and G20 initiatives, emphasizing how collaboration between these platforms could amplify impact and drive meaningful change on a global scale. Contributions from this panel fed into the final O20 document, shaping policy recommendations for a fair and sustainable blue economy.
